Choosing the right space for wallpaper

Well if our last post has tempted any wallpaper virgins out there to try wallpaper, we’d love to hear from you. Today is about choosing the right space. Even if you've used wallpaper before, the following photos of some of our work may be the inspiration you need to try it in a different space. I thought we could get the ball rolling with a couple:

    Tips from Jon...

    TAKE A STEP BACK

Choosing the right space is especially important when you’re creating just one accent wall. Put on your “imagination” glasses and peek into your proposed space from the next room over and consider how your feature wall will look in its context. If using your imagination isn't really one of your strong points, try obtaining a sample of the paper you have in mind and experiment with placing it on different walls and viewing the paper from another room. Do the colours work together? Will the feature wall be a welcome surprise, or is it jarring?

     AVOID PATTERN FATIGUE

If you’re the kind of person who likes to go big or go home you likely won’t be interested in a wallpaper unless it’s bold, bright or patterned, or all three at once. As wallpaper enthusiasts ourselves, we’re right behind you in daring to install a busy wallpaper, but as a small word of caution: Rooms where you spend the least amount of time are your safest bets — think hallways, stairs and powder rooms. That way, every time you enter the less-frequented space, you’ll LOVE seeing your walls, instead of quickly coming down with a case of pattern fatigue.

Now as more general guide, here is a room by room breakdown to help you choose the best space (or spaces) to try wallpaper in your home.

Kitchen

The more inspired the cook–the better the food!
Makes sense right? But, if you are anything like me, the kitchen is one of those places visited more out of necessity and less out of choice. Since cabinetry usually dominates the majority of wall space, how can you tszuj up your kitchen to be a little more inspiring? You guessed it! Wallpaper adds an enormous visual punch even in small doses.

Personally, a cheerful splash back, fun feature wall or a drop of a funky graphic would definitely make the kitchen more inviting - even for those on dish washing duty. You could also use wallpaper to line the interior of your shelving units or place it behind open shelves.

Living & Dining

Your living room is no doubt a social area, a place where family and friends spend time together. Therefore, when considering where to try wallpaper, an entertainment area like this is a great contender. Depending on your own unique style, your living room walls can be fun, fresh, inviting and even patterned. Since the space is usually one of the biggest in your home, prints or patterns can be successfully used without being overwhelming.

Inject a breath of fresh air and style into your dining room with very little effort by introducing wallpaper. If your walls are already painted, consider choosing a complimentary wallpaper as a feature wall to create a new focal point and fresh topic of dinner conversation.

Master Bedroom

Your master bedroom is most likely a very unique and personal space in your home. Choosing one or more of your walls to be papered can be exciting and really set the theme for the decor of the room. With the right choice of paper and its placement, your wall/s may become your favourite feature of your personal haven - refreshing and relaxing at the same time.

Children’s bedroom

Add emphasis to your fireplace with a few rolls of wallpaper
Redecorating you child’s bedroom is the perfect excuse to be as bold, brave or magical as you want. In fact, it opens up a whole new world of exciting wallpaper possibilities that can really only be pulled off in this unique space.

If you decide on a theme, choose one that will preserve your child’s interest for longer than a year or so. Pre-schoolers will squeal when they see their favourite television characters on their walls, but after a few years at primary school, they might suddenly decide they're too grown up for the likes of Bob the Builder and Dora the Explorer and put in a request for a make-over! Themes like animals, the jungle, under the sea and space are much more likely to span their interests for longer. Murals and world maps will also be a great source of imagination inspiration for your little one.

   Guest Bedroom

The guest bedroom is the perfect space to install that bright, patterned and bold wallpaper that you fell in LOVE with when you first saw, but later decided it might be a bit much in your master bedroom. You’ll find a few more reasons of walking down the hall to peek in at your statement walls and when guests do come to stay, you’ll enjoy seeing their faces as they first put down their bags.

HOW TO SPOT A WALLPAPER ENTHUSIAST:

  1. While watching a beautiful movie, rather than making exclamations about the characters or events of the film you'll hear "Wow! Look at that wallpaper!" at the change of a new scene.
  2.      Hands are rubbed along the walls of a wallpapered room as they enter for the first time.
  3.      Eyes will twinkle when an opportunity to work with a new stunning wallpaper comes along.

Well my Dad, Jon Bevan, is definitely a wallpaper enthusiast! And after at least two decades in the game he's also learned a thing or two that are worth sharing with the world. So maybe you are tempted to try wallpaper? Or perhaps you too are a wallpaper enthusiast interested in some tips from one of the best? Whoever you are or whatever reason you're here, thanks for coming! Let's kick things off with a

       Tip from Jon...

BLACK WALLPAPER

PROBLEM:  "The seams of my beautiful black wallpaper are showing!"

CAUSE: Unless the edges of the roll have been tinted at the manufacturing stage the standard white edges will most likely be visible after installation.

SOLUTION: Colour the white edges of roll prior to unwrapping the roll with similar coloured artists pastel. Jon recommends Schumacher Artist Pastels.

Black Wallpaper Rolls
If your edges of your rolls aren't tinted like this, a few days after installation you may begin to see the seams
